William Cooper establishes the Australian Aborigines League

William Cooper establishes the Australian Aborigines League in Melbourne. The nucleus is Cummeragunja exiles including Doug Nicholls, Margaret Tucker and Bill Onus (grandson of Martha Everingham of Sackville Reserve). Cooper also gathers signatures for a petition to the King to have an Aboriginal representative in the Lower House of Federal Parliament, and for citizen and land rights. A similar attempt is made in NSW (Australian Museum; Gary Foley, Koori History website)
