Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALC) are successful in acquiring land

All of the Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALC) are successful in acquiring land. While the Awabakal LALC is the first formed (1 September), the Karuah L.A.L.C is the first to have a successful claim (December 1984). The Awabakal’s first successful claim is an allotment in Young St. Carrington in 1986. However, Koompahtoo, based around the western reaches of Lake Macquarie is perhaps the most successful in terms of area of land successfully claimed. Each council operates programs, including housing, for the benefit of members. They also work with developers to ensure minimum risk of destruction of Goori sites through economic development.
