Herne Bay Housing
NSW Housing Commission for people "with no place to go". Now known as the suburb of Riverwood. 1942 - General Hospital was built for the US Army (the largest military hospital in Australia). Both staff & patients were segregated into black and white quarters. Immediately after the war the hospital reverted to NSW Housing Commission & the huts were used to ease the chronic housing shortage. Severe overcrowding & poor facilities resulted in a slum like existence for the poorest of the poor.
